READING
What Should a Mother Wear? Shirley Hughes, My Style Icon by Lauren Bravo
In May, I read an article by Lauren Bravo that’s been echoing in my mind ever since. One quote in particular stood out, which captures the essence of why I started Beyond Nine — and I think it’ll resonate with many of you:
“The way mums of small children want to dress hasn’t changed all that much. We want to look playful, but not clownish. Like elegant adult women, not overgrown toddlers. And for God’s sake, give us a few fripperies. Give us big sleeves, daft collars, exquisite details. Sharp cuts but soft, forgiving fabrics. Clothes that celebrate our miraculous bodies but, crucially, don’t demand too much of them. No complicated underwear; nothing that’s going to dig in, ride up or fall down. We’re already being pulled in so many directions.”

LISTENING
My youngest has discovered Graceland and in turn I’ve fallen for it all over again. During the track ‘Homeless’, there’s a short a capella section — and watching my son’s face as he realised the music was made by voices alone? Magic. Those moments of discovery are one of the best things about parenthood.
EATING
Crab Linguine
We spent a few days in Mousehole, a tiny fishing village in Cornwall, for a quick family break. My younger brother, who’s a chef, made the most of being by the sea and whipped up the most incredible crab linguine. With warmer days ahead, I’m looking forward to more dinners like that: fresh, simple, and surrounded by people I love.
ENJOYING
Nastrurtium Season
May might be my favourite month of the year — the first real burst of spring where everything starts to bloom and thaw. The flora and fauna come alive, and every year I’m surprised by how much joy it brings me. My camera roll is currently 80% nasturtiums and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
SHOPPING
I recently stumbled across the sculptural pottery of Camille Biddell. I ordered a pair of candlesticks which are even better in real life— and have my eye on one of her butter dishes that are currently sold out. I slightly regret sharing this now, as it lowers my chances of snagging one when she restocks them…

WATCHING
A film that took me by surprise — The Ballad of Wallace Island by Tim Key and Tom Basden. It’s funny, sweet, and unexpectedly tender. One of those rare movies that leaves you feeling sad, grateful, and happy all at once.

DOING
I’m making a point this month to carve out time for creativity. A new pottery studio just opened near the office — and they do kids’ sessions, which are surprisingly hard to come by in Bristol. I’ll definitely be booking us in for a session over the summer holidays.
WEARING
There are so many exciting pieces dropping this month, but the one I can’t stop wearing is the Jamie Waistcoat. I throw her over any pair of trousers and feel instantly put together. The more sculptural the trouser, the better — in my opinion.
Raglan Tee
Sunny days call for sunny clothes. The Raglan Tee in Citrine is my current go-to. It adds a bold pop of colour while keeping things easy and comfortable — which is, frankly, my jam.
Beyond all that? I’m super excited for Beyond Nine’s in-person sample sale coming soon and an event we’re busy planning taking place in Manchester this summer. Keep an eye out on our socials to find out more soon.
Until next time, here’s to finding joy in the little things!
